Special Notice:
Since this Newsletter is coming out a little later than normally, the time
between you receiving it and the first workshops of the year is
exceedingly short (and that's an understatement). So, for what it is
worth, here is a notice about these workshops (details are further down in
the Newsletter)
London — January 17 - 21 - new Principles and
Practice Week
(see details of these new workshops in the News section
as well as the workshops details section)
Stockholm — January 24 - 28
And also:
For those of you who are on-line when you read this, you can jump to the
web site version at
www.learningmethods.com/newsltr4.htm and take advantage of many
more links to navigate within the Newsletter and jump to details of the
workshops and articles.
Greetings to all of you
It's been almost three years since the LearningMethods work formally
began! It has grown and moved along further and faster in that period than
I ever imagined it would. All of this is thanks to all of you—your
interest, your dedication, your experiments and enthusiasm.
And this is the fourth edition of this periodic newsletter to keep you
informed about what's happening in the LearningMethods work.
Some of the items in the last newsletter about new professional
developments for the work have now been completed and others are moving
along. There are some new things too that were not even conceived of last
September. So read on...
I hope you have had a good holiday season and year 2000 celebrations (the
only millennium any of us will ever see). I wish you all a wonderful and
successful year, full of discovery and delight.
warmly,
David
A note about this Newsletter
Some sections of the Newsletter are the same each issue, e.g. the
informational sections like this one. If you've read it before, just skip
over it this time...
Some of you have requested to be kept in touch with what is happening.
Others are getting this simply because we think you might be interested.
But, if you aren't interested and wish to be removed from this e-mail
list, see the end of this newsletter for details. On the other hand if you
know someone else on e-mail who might be interested, details are also at
the bottom about how they can join the list.
This issue comes to you in the HTML-mail format so that it can be
formatted to look better and to give you ready access to the embedded
links. This makes for a bigger message, but since it only comes out twice
a year, we are taking the chance that you won't mind too much. Our
apologies if you cannot receive HTML-mail with your e-mail program.
There is also a plain-text version with all the same material, just
without the fancy formatting. We would be happy to send you that version
if you didn't successfully receive this one. Or you can go to the
web site at www.learningmethods.com/newsltr4.htm and view this
version with more links. If this HTML format causes havoc on your system,
we apologize, but please let us know at: lmlist at learningmethods.com so we can send you the text-only
version next time.
You can always get up-to-date information about upcoming workshops and who
to contact for reservations by visiting the LearningMethods web site at:
www.learningmethods.com
This is sent to you "BCC" (Blind Carbon Copy) to protect your privacy.
There are hundreds of recipients now, but with BCC no one can see who else
gets the newsletter.

LearningMethods News
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
AMA publishes full range of articles
AMA or Association Methode d'Apprentisage (LearningMethods Association), a
non-profit association set up in France to promote and publicize the
LearningMethods work, is now publishing all the current articles on the
work. These include:
- The Rounder We Go The Samer We Get
by David Gorman (in English,
French and Swedish)
- Working with a Violinist
by David Gorman (in English and
French, coming in Dutch)
- On the Virtues, or Having the Experience but
Missing the Meaning
by David Gorman (in English)
- Conquering the Fear of Heights
by Eillen Sellam (in English and
French)
- In Relation to Relationships
by Almut Kraker (in English, coming in
German)
with several others coming soon...
New doors open in the south of France
With the aid of a business development program from the French Government,
Eillen Sellam has been working very hard contacting just about everyone in
Provence who has anything to do with performance, teaching or helping
others. All her "pushing doors" (as they call it here) has been very
rewarding. In addition to forming a valuable network of contacts in
various educational institutions and regional offices of the ministry of
arts and culture, she has started a series of teaching jobs at the
Conservatoire de Théâtre in Avignon, L’AJMI, a jazz performance and
teaching school also in Avignon, and L'École de Musique in
Bagnols-sur-Cèze working with the teachers.
This has also lead to a new workshop for
professional actors from the region which David will lead February 20
and 21 at the Chartreuse de Valbonne monastery near us.
Eillen says that, contrary to her original ideas, she now enjoys the
process of contacting people and explaining the LearningMethods work so
much that she doesn't want to stop. She'd like to go to different cities
and hustle up business for the Teachers there. Next stop Paris...
Professional Code of Conduct now in place
The Professional Code of Conduct for all LearningMethods Teachers has been
ratified and signed by each current teacher. It now forms the basis of our
'contract' with students and the public to operate ethically.
If you are interested in viewing the Code of Conduct, a copy has been
posted to the web site at
www.learningmethods.com/conduct.htm. Or you can get a copy by e-mail
by sending a request to: < info
at learningmethods.com>
Trademarking the LearningMethodsTM
name
We have been lucky enough to have the advice of some very experienced
people concerning how to protect the LearningMethods name. This entails
trade-marking the name "LearningMethods" and the LearningMethods logo (of
the dawning sun with the name across it) so that we will have legal
control of the use of the name.
Trademark protection will mean that no unqualified people will be able to
trade off the growing reputation of the name (something, by the way, which
will be sure to happen as time goes on). This is an essential step in
being able to keep the work unified and consistent.
The trade-marking is already in process with an application lodged and a
filing date issued (the filing date becomes the registration date when the
application is granted). With the trademark in place, then the name can be
officially licensed to each qualified teacher, granting them the legal
right to use the name and logo professionally.
New series of Principles and Practice
Workshops
There is a new sort of workshop beginning this year that will enable us to
create a solid foundation under the training of new LearningMethods
teachers as well as the on-going development of teaching skills by those
who are already teachers.
In one sense these workshops are the same in format and approach as normal
LearningMethods workshops, and they will remain open to anyone who is
interested in attending. But, by providing time for others to be leading
pieces of teaching work, the workshops will accomplish three other goals:
1. more supervised practice teaching experience for Apprentice Teachers
2. chances for existing Teachers to raise issues and develop their
teaching skills
3. and a format to help train and coordinate a group of experienced
teachers to act as Supervisors for Apprentices and
Teachers
The next items explain these three in more detail...
More teaching practice for Apprentice
Teachers...
There are more and more Apprentice Teachers reaching the stage where they
are ready to begin leading pieces of teaching work under supervision from
David. So far this has taken place as part of the normal workshops. This
gives the Apprentices the opportunity to work with the real issues that
the workshop participants bring. It is also very valuable for the other
participants since the processes and principles of the work are brought
out very clearly. Most people come to the workshops expecting to work with
David, but there has been no problem with an Apprentice Teacher leading a
piece of work with David's help once or twice a week.
However, as the number of Apprentices increase we needed a format that
would allow more of them to have more chances to practice. This new series
of workshops will remain open to everyone, however, it will be clear to
all participants that even thought they may still have quite a few chances
to work with David, there will an emphasis on providing as much time as
appropriate for the Apprentices and other Teachers to also work and learn.
This format is a marvelous way for everyone to get a deeper sense of the
work and how to apply it, whether you are experienced or not. They are
also ideal workshops for anyone considering training as a LearningMethods
teacher to see more about the work in practice and what is involved in
teaching it.
On-going development for the existing
Teachers...
Learning and growth do not stop when someone becomes a LearningMethods
Teacher, so the next stage is also to create an environment where learning
can continue and grow through Teachers sharing and exploring together.
These new Principles and Practice workshops will also be a format where
Teachers can bring their teaching problems, learn new things and share
discoveries.
Each LearningMethods teacher, of course, will eventually develop their own
style and approach to the work. But it is only by setting up structures
where we work together that we can ensure there will be a consistency and
unity to the LearningMethods work over time. Working together and showing
each other our ways of working allows us to clarify what is and what is
not the LearningMethods work (its roots and trunk if you like) and to help
it keep evolving and growing (new branches and fruits, perhaps, if this is
not stretching the analogy).
And training a group of senior Supervising
Teachers
A very important part of the organization of the work is to build a
network of experienced Teachers who can provide a means of on-going
support and supervision so Apprentice Teachers can get help and have more
chances to practice in between their workshops with David. These
Principles and Practice workshops will also serve as a convenient format
to bring together the experienced teachers who want to become Supervisors
to witness the supervision process, help them build the skills they will
need to help teach the future teachers and make sure that this supervision
process is consistent from person to person.
Eventually, this network of Supervising Teachers will also be available
for consultation with new teachers whenever they may need help or support.
Structure & Function weekend in London
Many of you will already know about David's Structure and Function
workshops which explore our human physical and functional organization
(balance, support, breathing, locomotion, etc.... and how to get out of
the way so that the function of this incredible miracle that we are can
unfold without interference...). Others of you may not know of his
background in anatomy and physiology or of the 600-page illustrated book—The Body Moveable—he put together on the human
musculo-skeletal system.
In all the busy time of starting up the LearningMethods work, these
Structure and Function workshops have fallen a bit into the background.
But they remain just as relevant to anyone who wants to know more about
how they function and what all the common chronic physical problems are
about. Over the last few people there have been consistent requests for
more of these workshops...
So, the first of these is planned for the early March period in London,
probably on a weekend just before the London LearningMethods workshop. It
will be the first of several, but will also be complete in itself as a
general introduction to the suspension model of our organization
discovered by David with detailed looks at various functions like
breathing and voice, etc. Subsequent weekends will build on this model to
explore other areas of our functioning. It will be held as part of Karen
Wentworth's Alexander Technique Teacher Training program.
Here's a little taste of the description of the workshop (more on
the web site at:
www.learningmethods.com/LMW_UK.htm#Patterns):
Discover a new model of human design and function;
— a model of human function which is truly holistic;
— a model that reveals our design as inherently integrated creatures
securely grounded and fully organised for free, effortless movement;
— a model where muscles don't hold us up nor contract to move us, but act
as sensitive detectors of instability and respond by suspending us in an
elastic web of adjustable support that follows us around, springing us
into activity;
— a model which shows that when we interfere with this natural
integration, we become divided into parts (creating separate mind and
body) and inevitably end up with chronic pain, tension, joint damage,
strains and other organic problems.
Let David know if you are interested in setting up a workshop in your
area.

VirtualNews
This time we have a lot of virtual news—news about events which haven't
happened yet. We haven't hired Madam Mirelda to read the future, but
rather that most (but not all) of the Internet news items this time are
about things that are in process but not yet completed. Read on...
A new translation of article coming
Dirk van de Velde from Belgium is working on a translation into Dutch of
David's article, "Working With A Violinist". It is at the
proof-reading stage now and when it is finished, it will be posted as
violindu.htm.
Dirk, who is a violinist himself in a busy string quartet, is also
organising a workshop for David in Ghent, Belgium later this year.
Police jump off 5-story buildings with Eillen's
help
Eillen received a message last week that shows us to never underestimate
the power of the pen and Internet... and people's ability to work things
out for themselves with only the smallest help..
Date Mon, 10 Jan 2000 222410 +0100
To Eillen Sellam: < eillen
at learningmethods.com>
Subject Thank you!
Hello there,
My name is David. I work at the Campbell County Sheriffs Department in
Gillette, Wyoming. I was speaking with my Sgt. Her name is Jackie. She
had expressed to me that she had this tremendous fear of heights. She
said that she has had this fear since she could remember. Anyhow, I
looked up on the computer about the fear of heights (acrophobia). I found
your article and printed it off for her. She read the article and we
worked on her fear with the principals you shared. I am happy to report
that after working through this fear, she was able to descend off the
side of a five level parking garage (approximately 70 feet) by rope. I
thank you for your help.
Deputy David S. Yahnel
Web site popularity grows
Speaking of feedback from the articles and the web site, the
LearningMethods web site received over 26,000 hits last month. This is up
from 20,000 in July. This increase translates into more people hearing
about the work, more people coming to workshops and more book sales.
Like the example above, it especially means more people reading the
articles and giving feedback about how much they were affected, offering
their own experiences and asking questions about how they can get help
with their own related issues. With the international nature of the
Internet, many of the respondents are far from any LearningMethods
workshops or teachers. We can add them to a database and mailing list for
future workshops which may be closer, but people want help now, not later.
For instance, Eillen had an e-mail from a man in the Middle East with an
intense fear of flying who wanted help immediately as he had several long
flights coming up. He would gladly have flown to France to work with her,
but you can appreciate his dilemma.
Giving a lesson over the phone
However, when people have become interested in the work and want some help
but are not able to travel for workshops, it has proven possible to work
with them over the phone. With cheaper phone rates in many places this is
viable option, even for a session lasting an hour or more. Of course, the
visual and personal clues are missing when people are not face-to-face,
but for a work which is largely verbal, it is better to be able to
interact with someone and help them over the phone than not at all. See
next item for more on this...
Probably some day it will possible to do this in some interactive way over
the Internet too. At present, an e-mail 'conversation' can help for
someone who has already been to a workshop, but typing away for hours and
waiting for a reply is quite limited in time and depth for anyone starting
from the beginning.
Buy books, pay for workshops and classes with VISA
Soon we will have the ability to accept payments by VISA card for on-line
sales of books and articles. This will greatly facilitate your ability to
quickly find what you want on the web site and order it right away for
immediate delivery (this includes the 600-page Body Moveable). The web
site will be hooked up with a secure server so that all sales and credit
card information are safely encrypted in transit.
When our VISA merchant status is approved for use on the web site, you
will also be able to pay for LearningMethods workshops using your VISA
card over the phone to our office or by filling out a registration form.
With VISA payment it will also be easier to conduct long-distance lessons
(see above item). Eventually it may be possible to look up workshop
details on-line at the web site, then immediately register for workshops
and pay the workshop deposit or balance by VISA card.
With the workshops taking place in many different countries and
currencies, paying by VISA should make things a lot easier for everyone—no
more changing and carrying wads of money, paying for traveller's cheques
or making expensive bank-to-bank transfers, plus you will be billed in
your local currency. When everything is set up you will receive an e-mail
with details.
A reminder about contributions to the
On-line Library
We want the web pages to be as full and representative as possible. One of
the best ways to get visitors' interest and help them grasp what the work
is about is for them to be able read about other people's experiences. So,
if you have written anything about your insights, your experiments and
your changes through the work, or would be willing to do so, we would be
very happy to add you to the growing collection in the on-line library.
For those of you who are shy about your writing ability, remember, it
doesn't have to be perfect. Just put your actual experiences and
understanding in your own words as you would if you were telling someone
about it. We'd be happy to help with editing and suggestions if you
want... Send your work to: < newsletter
at learningmethods.com>
either pasted into the e-mail as plain text or as an attachment to your
e-mail as a Microsoft Word document (.DOC) or Rich Text Format (.RTF).
Most word processors can save a file in the RTF format. A Word or RTF
document will keep all your formatting (bold, italic, centred, underlined,
etc.), plain text will lose all formatting. Either PC or Apple Mac formats
are OK.

Workshops with David Gorman
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
General Description of Workshops
All of the workshops below follow the same format (even the Principles
and Practice weeks with the differences described above). See details
below for each workshop for dates and times and locations. Translation is
available if needed for the workshops in France, Germany and Austria.
The emphasis in the groups is on learning how to learn and find out for
yourself; i.e. the workshops are driven by your own questions, problems,
explorations and experiments. The weeks are open to anyone willing and
committed to learning more about themselves, to challenging their current
framework of understanding and to exploring their practice or performance.
The classes will be small, usually between 5-8 participants, in order to
ensure a depth of personal and practical work. Most of the time we will be
working as a group so that each person learns to articulate their
experiences and everyone can share in the learning. There is a tremendous
support and understanding when we all go through things together.
The structure and format of each day is similar—approximately 1000am to
400pm with lunch from about 1230pm to 130pm. Because of the small class
size, preference will be given to those committing for the whole workshop,
but if numbers permit, it may be possible to attend for a shorter period.
Private classes or small groups of 2-4 (1/2 hour for each person) with
David may be available some days after the workshop—contact the organizer
of each event for further information.
