Oslo Norway - One Week |
All of the workshops below follow the same format (unless otherwise noted in the workshop details). See details below for each workshop for dates and times and locations. Translation is available for the workshops in France and Sweden.
The emphasis in the groups is on learning how to learn and find out for yourself; i.e. the workshops are driven by your own questions, problems, explorations and experiments. The weeks are open to anyone willing and committed to learning more about themselves, to challenging their current framework of understanding and to exploring their practice or performance.
The classes will be small, usually between 6-8 participants, in order to ensure a depth of personal and practical work. Most of the time we will be working as a group so that each person learns to articulate their experiences and everyone can share in the learning. There is a tremendous support and understanding when we all go through things together.
The structure and format of each day is similar--approx. 10:00am to 3:30pm or 4:00pm with lunch from about 12:30pm to 1:30pm. Because of the small class size, preference will be given to those committing for the whole workshop, but if numbers permit, it may be possible to attend for a shorter period. Private classes or small groups of 2-4 (1/2 hour for each person) with David may be available some days after 3:30pm--contact the organizer of each event for further information.

A New Model of Human Structure and Function
We want to be whole, yet we still think of ourselves in parts - my aching back, the tension in my shoulders, toning up my abdominal muscles... What we need is a whole new model of human structure and function which is truly wholistic; a model that reveals our design as creatures who are inherently integrated, securely grounded and fully organised for free, effortless movement; a model where muscles don't hold us up and contract to move us, but act as sensitive detectors of instability and respond by suspending us in an elastic web of adjustable support which follows us around releasing us into activity, automatically and reflexly; a model which shows that when we interfere with this natural integration, we divide ourselves into parts (creating a separate mind and body) and inevitably cause the common chronic tensions, back pains, joint damage, strain injuries and other organic problems. The workshop will explore this new model of our human system using a lively blend of practical activities, experiential work, information and discussion while going through the major structural areas and functional systems - posture and support - breathing, expression and emotion - the spine and our organic metabolism - the arm/hand organisation with its sensitivity and precision - the built-in primate nature of the legs that can be accessed to reduce effort and eliminate back problems - why some kinds of sports training and remedial exercises don't work - the senses and awareness - and how our experience, beliefs and consciousness all interact to either bind us more deeply into unconstructive habits of strain and conflict, or liberate us to a wholeness where we are not even separate from the world around us let alone from ourselves.
Who is it for?...
The course presumes no special knowledge of the body, though for those who already know a lot, you'll find a whole new point of view to deepen your understanding. It is designed for anyone who is already exploring themselves and their function through the Alexander Technique, or other method, for health and medical professionals, body-workers, and those who work with others, performers athletes and those who use themselves as their own instrument. All you need is yourself and a willingness to learn that your system is more whole than you ever thought! In english with english/french translation available if needed. Location in Paris is undecided at present.
