How to reach us

Greetings to all of you,

This is the second edition of this periodic newsletter to keep you informed about the LearningMethods work - upcoming workshops, news, additions to the web site, etc. Some of you have requested to be kept in touch with what is happening. Others are getting this simply because we think you might be interested. But, if you aren't interested and wish to be removed from this e-mail list, see the end of this newsletter for details. On the other hand if you know someone else on e-mail who might be interested, details are also at the bottom about how they can join the list.

This issue comes to you in the html-mail format so that it can be formatted to look better and to give you ready access to the embedded links. Our apologies if you cannot receive html-mail with your e-mail program (for those of you, it is also being sent as normal text mail so you will still get all the text, just without the fancy formatting).  If this format causes havoc on your system, please let us know at:  lmlist@learningmethods.com so we can send you a separate text-only version next time.

You can always get up-to-date information about upcoming workshops and who to contact for reservations by visiting the LearningMethods web site at: www.learningmethods.com

Wishing you all the very best for 1999,
                                                         David

LearningMethods News

Announcement -
Two new LearningMethods Teachers

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
This is a somewhat late announcement, but better late than never. In October last year, we were very pleased to recognize two new LearningMethods teachers: Alison Murray and John France, both from London.  Alison and John had been training as Alexander Technique teachers with David at the Centre for Training in London when the school finished. They both elected to carry on in the apprenticeship to be teachers of the LearningMethods work rather than go to a different school to finish their Alexander training. Now they are the first two to become certificated as LearningMethods teachers who had not already been teachers of the Alexander work.

 *** Congratulations to you both ! ***
(and double congratulations to John who is now the proud father
of young Nicholas, born Dec 4th,
and also to Anja, the happy mom.)

The Apprenticeship Training expands
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
It has been a year of growth in many ways for the LearningMethods work: new teachers, workshops in new cities (Oslo and Washington DC), but the one that surprised all of us was the number of people interested in becoming LearningMethods teachers. In this first full year of the work, there are now half a dozen people who have felt the immense value of the work in their own lives and who now want to learn more about the work and eventually to teach others. They are now part of the regular on-going apprenticeship training which is integrated into the normal workshop format.

In addition there are another three talented apprentices who are in the final stages of their training and are now working regularly with students in an unsupervised capacity (two of them are also fully qualified teachers of the Alexander technique who are making the switch to this new work):

Ċsa Bergenfors    e-mail:  <asa at learningmethods.com>
       Stockholm area: P.O. Box 187, 178 02 Drottningholm
               Tel: +46 (0)8-759-0147, mobile: +46 (0)707-306450

Mary Boyarski    e-mail:  mary at ecoart.demon.co.uk
London area:  132 Leighton Road, London, NW5 2RG
               Tel: +44 (0)171-485-3317
(also a qualified Alexander Technique teacher)

Almut Kraker    e-mail:  <almut at learningmethods.com>
Vienna area:  Lerchengasse 4/10, A-1080 Vienna
                Tel: +43 (0)1-407-6885
(also a qualified Alexander Technique teacher)

The LearningMethods Forum also expands
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
For those of you who don't know it, the LearningMethods Forum is an e-mail discussion group exclusively for those who have experience of the work from workshops and classes. It provides a forum for people to keep in touch with their fellow 'learners' and share their insights and explorations as well as their questions. The initial 20-some group has now expanded to 47 members. It is still a little slow in getting off the ground as the 'natural' tendency on e-mail lists is to read all the contributions but forget that you are one of the people who could contribute yourself. Nonetheless, it is off the ground and is always there for anyone who has a question or a discovery to share.

Planning to come to the Provence workshops?
Rent your own villa with friends...
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
As those of you know who have been here, Provence is a beautiful spot (here's where it would be tempting to insert a few photos of the area). And a wonderful opportunity to combine a workshop with a holiday to see Provence and and soak up some sun. Enjoy the workshop time out on our terrace with its view across the Rhone valley to the mountains, the leisurely lunches by the swimming pool, then have the later afternoon and evening free for walks and exploring the area.

So far, most of the people coming for the workshops have been staying at the 12th century monastery, La Chartreuse de Valbonne in the forest behind our house. It is a lovely place with gorgeous botanical walks and the advantage of being very inexpensive—6 nights, double-occupancy with all meals for 1025 FF (approx. £100 or $US160) or 6 nights, double-occupancy and cook your own meals for 510 FF (approx. £50 or $US80).

But an equally interesting alternative is to get together with several others and rent your own space—you have your privacy, make your own meals together and hang out in your way. We have tracked down a number of houses (and gites or holiday apartments) in the countryside around us that are available for rent for one or two week periods at very reasonable prices. Suitable for 2, 3, 4 or 5 people the total costs range from 1500 FF to 2500 FF per week (£150 / $US245 to £250 / $US400)—not very different from staying at the monastery. Some are within walking distance, for others you'd need a car—but be warned, all will book up fairly quickly for the spring and summer. For more information, contact us at:  <info at learningmethods.com> or by phone to +33 04-66-39-55-75.

A new article and a new old article on the web site
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Just posted on the web site is a wonderful new article by Almut Kraker, cellist, Alexander teacher and LearningMethods apprentice from Vienna. It is called "In Relation to Relationships - A Self-Study" and is about love and the pain of getting stuck in unsatisfying relationships and how she has begun to liberate herself from her vicious circle. You can find it at www.learningmethods.com/akraker.htm

Eillen Sellam has also added an addendum to her "Conquering the Fear of Heights" article, describing her process (and her amazement) at her victory in being able to scale the scaffolding up the outside of a four-story building in the rain. This article is available through links from her web site at www.learningmethods.com/eillen/

Look out for other new articles by David and others coming soon...

Speaking of articles...
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
We want the web pages to be as full and representative as possible. One of the best ways to get visitors' interest and help them grasp what the work is about is for them to be able read about other people's experiences. So, if you have written anything about your insights, your experiments and your changes through the work, or would be willing to do so, we would be very happy to add you to the growing collection in the on-line library.

For those of you who are shy about your writing ability, remember, it doesn't have to be perfect. Just put your actual experiences and understanding in your own words as you would if you were telling someone about it. We'd be happy to help with editing and suggestions if you want... You can send in your deathless prose to:  <newsletter at learningmethods.com> either attached as a Microsoft Word document or an Rich Text Format (.RTF) or pasted into the e-mail as plain text. A Word or RTF document will keep all your formatting (bold, italic, centred, underlined, etc.), plain text will lose all formatting.

The Debate continues...
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Many of you will already have read some or all of the intense debate started on the Alextech e-mail list last June by David when he wrote in challenging the premises behind the Alexander Technique and offering another way of seeing things. This original debate in its entirety has been posted to the Direction Journal site at www.directionjournal.com/alextech. That version of the debate ended with the dying down of events on the Alextech list.

However, further interesting correspondence has been coming privately to David from various people who have read the debate. So there is now a new version of the entire debate posted to the LearningMethods site that includes this new material. You can find it at www.learningmethods.com/debate/  In addition, anyone reading the debate there can respond right away with their own contributions which will be added to the on-going discussion.

Offer of web space to all LearningMethods teachers
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
The growth of interest in the Internet has been phenomenal. Even the LearningMethods site, which is a relatively new site, is receiving an average of 210 hits each day, mostly visitors to the articles page and the schedule of workshops. To help the growing number of LearningMethods teachers tap into this potential, we are offering them free web space on the LearningMethods site where they can design and post their own web pages, articles and teaching calendars. Links will be put into the main site leading to these new pages. The first, Eillen Sellam's, has been up for a while at www.learningmethods.com/eillen/. Several other teachers are in the process of preparing their own pages, so keep an eye out for these new sites...

Do you have any news...  or upcoming workshops?
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
Hopefully this newsletter will become not just a one-way vehicle to you, but a multi-way joint endeavour. If you have any news to share, announcements, or upcoming workshops to inform us about, send an e-mail to:  <newsletter at learningmethods.com> with all the details. The only thing we ask is that your submission is directly relevant to the LearningMethods work and not about some unrelated interest of yours, no matter how dear to your heart.

There is no particular deadline since this newsletter is sent out as a new teaching schedule is set up and whenever there is enough news, but of course the more you send in the more often it will come out...

General Description of Workshops

All of the workshops below follow the same format (unless otherwise noted in the workshop details). See details below for each workshop for dates and times and locations. Translation is available for the workshops in France and Sweden.

The emphasis in the groups is on learning how to learn and find out for yourself; i.e. the workshops are driven by your own questions, problems, explorations and experiments. The weeks are open to anyone willing and committed to learning more about themselves, to challenging their current framework of understanding and to exploring their practice or performance.

The classes will be small, usually between 6-8 participants, in order to ensure a depth of personal and practical work. Most of the time we will be working as a group so that each person learns to articulate their experiences and everyone can share in the learning. There is a tremendous support and understanding when we all go through things together.

The structure and format of each day is similar—approx. 10:00am to 3:30pm with lunch from about 12:30pm to 1:30pm. Because of the small class size, preference will be given to those committing for the whole workshop, but if numbers permit, it may be possible to attend for a shorter period. Private classes or small groups of 2-4 (1/2 hour for each person) with David may be available some days after the workshop—contact the organizer of each event for further information.
