Greetings to all of you,

This is the third edition of this periodic newsletter to keep you informed about what's happening in the LearningMethods work. There are some exciting developments on the professional side. A Code of Conduct for teachers is being worked out, a new association has been formed to promote and develop the work in Europe and internationally, another new teacher has graduated, and the training process for apprentice teachers is evolving into a clearer and clearer process as we see what works best to help them learn how to help others learn.

Interest in the work has continued to grow as you can see from the web news and I've just about reached the limit of the number of workshops I can manage in a year. But fortunately other teachers are finding opportunities to do workshops and regular teaching, privately and with various institutions. So, all in all, it's been a very good year.

I hope it has been as good year for all of you. Some of you I've seen recently and others I will see soon, but to all of you, I wish you the very best for autumn and the rest of 1999

warmly,

               David

A note about this Newsletter
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Some of you have requested to be kept in touch with what is happening. Others are getting this simply because we think you might be interested. But, if you aren't interested and wish to be removed from this e-mail list, see the end of this newsletter for details. On the other hand if you know someone else on e-mail who might be interested, details are also at the bottom about how they can join the list.

This issue comes to you in the HTML-mail format so that it can be formatted to look better and to give you ready access to the embedded links. This makes for a bigger message, but since it only comes out twice a year, we are taking the chance that you mind too much. Our apologies if you cannot receive HTML-mail with your e-mail program. There is also a normal plain-text version with all the text, just without the fancy formatting--we would be happy to re-send that version if you didn't successfully receive this one.  If this HTML format causes havoc on your system, please let us know at: lmlist@learningmethods.com so we can send you the text-only version next time.

You can always get up-to-date information about upcoming workshops and who to contact for reservations by visiting the LearningMethods web site at: www.learningmethods.com

Another new LearningMethods Teacher
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

It is a great pleasure to be able to announce the addition of another new teacher to the fold. At the workshops in Stockholm in July we celebrated Ċsa Bergenfors becoming the ninth LearningMethods teacher. We organized a surprise party for her after the day's work and actually managed to keep it a secret, though she worked out what was going on as soon as she saw the balloons and champagne.

*** Congratulations to Ċsa ! ***

It has been a big year in more than one way for Ċsa. Not only did she become a teacher in July but she will become a mother in November and meet her next and greatest teacher.

Teachers take the work to new places

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

A few announcements about some new places where the work has spread...

Eillen Sellam is responding to interest in the work from Spain by setting up a workshop in Barcelona in October. She's planning on building a regular practice there as Barcelona is just 4 hours from home in the south of France (and her brother has just moved there too).

Bodil Rummelhoff from Stockholm, another teacher, will start working this autumn with the musicians at the Academie of Music in Malmö, in southern Sweden. She will have 4 different groups of 4 students each and each group will meet 10 times for 2 1/2 hours a session. The Swedish Royal Opera Orchestra in Stockholm also offers its members the opportunity to work with Bodil.

Almut Kraker, one of the senior apprentices from Vienna, was hired to teach this summer at the Orchestral Academy of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival in Germany. The Festival took place at Salzau Castle in Schleswig-Holstein and attracted over 140 musicians from 29 countries all over the world. Almut worked with about 45 of them in the three weeks from July 22nd to August 14th. As a result of the work in Schleswig-Holstein, Almut has now been invited to give a two days workshop at the University in Mainz, Germany.

Code of Conduct for LearningMethods Teachers

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Now that there are a growing number of teachers, it is time to put more and more of a solid professional foundation under the work. David has drafted a Professional Code of Conduct for all LearningMethods teachers. The draft code is being circulated now among teachers and apprentices to gather suggestions and amendments. When it is agreed upon, all teachers will sign the code and it will form the basis of our 'contract' with students and the public.

We would welcome feedback on the Code from anyone. So if you are interested, a copy of the draft has just been posted to the web site at www.learningmethods.com/conduct.htm. Or you can get a copy by e-mail by sending a request to:  <info at learningmethods.com>

On-going supervision for the Apprentice Teachers

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

There are a number of apprentice-teachers reaching the stage where they are ready to begin leading pieces of teaching work under supervision from David. Most of the time this takes place as part of the normal workshops. This gives the apprentices the opportunity to work with the real issues that the workshop participants bring. It is also very valuable for the other participants since the processes and principles of the work are brought out very clearly.

The next stage in developing the apprentice-teacher process is to provide a means of on-going supervision from the more experienced teachers so the apprentices can get help and have more chances to practice in between their workshops with David. To accomplish this, we are planning to bring together the experienced teachers who want to become supervisors to discuss what is involved and to begin to help them build the skills they will need to help teach the future teachers. Eventually this network of supervisors will also be available for consultation with new teachers whenever they may need help or support.

Non-profit Association set up in France

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

To create a means of getting people together to explore and promote the LearningMethods work a non-profit association has been formed in France. It is called the Association Methode d'Apprentisage or AMA (which translates roughly as the LearningMethods Association).

Eillen Sellam has been instrumental in setting up the Association and found a lot of support to help get it going. The Association's President is Florence Belaïs, a speech therapist from Paris and Dr. Jane de Watteville, a surgeon, is the Secretary Treasurer. Eillen will act as the administrator and main contact person. Membership is open to all who wish to support the work. Contact Eillen for further information at:  <eillen at learningmethods.com>

Here are the purposes and means of the Association (liberally translated from the original French)

Object of the Association:

  a)  To constitute a place of information and exchange for anyone
interested in the LearningMethods work developed by David Gorman.
  b)  To put into practice this learning principles and tools of this teaching.
  c)  To create liaison and interchange between teachers in France, Europe
and other countries to enables us to share our ideas, research and
       discoveries about our work.

Means of the Association:

  a)  Organization of workshops and apprentice teaching sessions.
  b)  Encouraging the writing of texts, articles and information on the work.
  c)  Translation of written and spoken material into French and other languages.

A new article by David and new translation
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Just posted on the web site is a new article by David called "On The Virtues, or having the experience but missing the meaning". We think of patience, honesty, courage, etc. as virtues -- elements of a good character. But how often do we find ourselves being the opposite -- impatient, dishonest or lacking courage?  If these virtues are so good, how come they seem so hard to live?  Can one practice a virtue like patience by just trying to 'be' patient?  Even if we manage sometimes, why do we find ourselves right back in the same difficulty again?  Or is there more going on here than meets the eye?  David shows another way of looking at these experiences that not only makes sense of them, but removes the 'problem' and the 'wrong' from them...

You can read it at www.learningmethods.com/virtues.htm

Eillen Sellam has just done a great job translating David's article, "Working With A Violinist" into French. The translated article called "Travailler avec une Violiniste" can be found at: www.learningmethods.com/violinfr.htm

The website gets a new look and an award...

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

The LearningMethods web site has been completely made over with a new simpler look designed to be more readable and to work better at different screen resolutions. There is a site map showing the layout of the whole website on one screen so any page can be easily found. We have still kept the formatting relatively simple so pages load faster and it won't strain older browsers and older machines...

The site has also been awarded recognition as a Key Resource by Links2Go. What is Links2Go?  Here's a description from their site:

"The Links2Go Key Resource award is both exclusive and objective. We do not accept nominations for Key Resource awards. Links2Go includes only the most relevant pages in its index. Fewer than one page in one thousand will ever be selected for inclusion. Further, unlike most awards that rely on the subjective opinion of "experts," many of whom have only looked at tens or hundreds of thousands of pages in bestowing their awards, the Links2Go Key Resource award is completely objective and is based on an analysis of millions of web pages. During the course of our analysis, we identify which links are most representative of each of the thousands of topics in Links2Go, based on how actual page authors index and organize links on their pages."

I'm not sure what this means, but we got the award anyway...

...and receives over 20,000 hits in July!

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

The web site received over 20,000 hits last month from visitors from all over the world! This is up from about 6500 hits a month at the start of the year. Quite a growth rate. The statistics program shows that the visits are about evenly split between the pages describing what the work is, the page leading to the on-line library of articles, pages holding the workshop schedule, and the teachers list.

There has been a lot of very positive feedback from people after they have read some of the articles and many of them have now come on workshops after first visiting the website. There is something about the Internet that makes people feel more free to get in touch, express their responses and then act on them. Or maybe there's something about the people who use the Internet... At any rate, the World-Wide Web Works!

New websites by LearningMethods Teachers

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Since we offered free web space to all LearningMethods teachers, we've had three of them take up the offer. As mentioned last issue, Eillen Sellam has had her site up for a while at www.eillensellam.com.  Now there are two more: Ann Penistan, who teaches in Europe and Canada has been on-line for several months at www.learningmethods.com/annie/  and Bodil Rummelhoff from Stockholm has just posted her site at www.learntolearn.se.  Go have a look, and I'm sure they'd welcome any feedback you might have.

Reminder about contributions to the On-line Library

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

We want the web pages to be as full and representative as possible. One of the best ways to get visitors' interest and help them grasp what the work is about is for them to be able read about other people's experiences. So, if you have written anything about your insights, your experiments and your changes through the work, or would be willing to do so, we would be very happy to add you to the growing collection in the on-line library.

For those of you who are shy about your writing ability, remember, it doesn't have to be perfect. Just put your actual experiences and understanding in your own words as you would if you were telling someone about it. We'd be happy to help with editing and suggestions if you want... Send your work to:  <newsletter at learningmethods.com> either pasted into the e-mail as plain text or as an attachment to your e-mail as a Microsoft Word document (.DOC) or Rich Text Format (.RTF). Most word processors can save a file in the RTF format. A Word or RTF document will keep all your formatting (bold, italic, centred, underlined, etc.), plain text will lose all formatting. Whatever you send, either the PC or Mac formats are OK.

Have any news...  or upcoming workshops?
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Hopefully this newsletter will become not just a one-way vehicle to you, but a multi-way joint endeavour. If you have any news to share, announcements, or upcoming workshops to inform us about, send an e-mail to:  <newsletter at learningmethods.com> with all the details. The only thing we ask is that your submission is directly relevant to the LearningMethods work and not about some unrelated interest of yours, no matter how dear to your heart.

There is no particular deadline since this newsletter is sent out whenever there is enough news and as a new teaching schedule is set up, but of course the more you send in the more often the Newsletter will come out...

Workshops with David Gorman
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

General Description of Workshops
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

All of the workshops below follow the same format (unless otherwise noted in the workshop details). See details below for each workshop for dates and times and locations. Translation is available for the workshops in France, Germany and Sweden.

The emphasis in the groups is on learning how to learn and find out for yourself; i.e. the workshops are driven by your own questions, problems, explorations and experiments. The weeks are open to anyone willing and committed to learning more about themselves, to challenging their current framework of understanding and to exploring their practice or performance.

The classes will be small, usually between 5-8 participants, in order to ensure a depth of personal and practical work. Most of the time we will be working as a group so that each person learns to articulate their experiences and everyone can share in the learning. There is a tremendous support and understanding when we all go through things together.

The structure and format of each day is similar--approximately 10:00am to 4:00pm with lunch from about 12:30pm to 1:30pm. Because of the small class size, preference will be given to those committing for the whole workshop, but if numbers permit, it may be possible to attend for a shorter period. Private classes or small groups of 2-4 (1/2 hour for each person) with David may be available some days after the workshop--contact the organizer of each event for further information.
